You might have noticed that there have been no posts here for a few days. Let me tell you why.
In a nutshell… my wife suffers from a chronic illness that can flare up and engulf our lives for periods of time. The illness is not physical, it’s mental.
Future research will probably find an organic origin for bipolar disorder. Bring on that day when we know the answer. But in the meantime in the real world, it’s drug therapy all round.
She’s on a medication that works really well, a new antidepressant that seems to also take care of the mania and rage. It took a lot of trial and error, a lot of different medications before the winning combination was found. But about two weeks ago, she ran out of her medication and forgot to get it filled, or lost the prescription, or something. I’m not sure. The bottom line is she went unmedicated.
Within days, my life was a war zone.
Anyway she’s back on the medication, and called me from work an hour ago to tell me how sorry she was about her behaviour. “That wasn’t me” she said. She feels ashamed. But this has been exhausting for me. I need a break; some time on my own. Think I’ll go away for a few days and give us all time to heal.
As for this blog… I’ll keep posting when I can.
update: this post has been shortened… I gave way too much personal information in the original version.

Sorry to hear that, but it’s a very common condition.
May you maintain resilience despite adversity.
My heart goes out to you. That wedding condition of ‘for better and for worse’ is a tough one to honour. All the best with it.
Thanks for the kind comments.
Yep, for better or worse… the trick is keeping her healthy. If I can do that, it’s plain sailing.
If not, well who knows. It’s best not to cross bridges before you reach them.
I hope it all gets easier for you – I don’t suffer from bipolar but I have friends who do.
I’ll add you to my prayers tonight.
