Russian humour

Russians have long been known for their dry, deadpan humour. In typical fashion, they’re unimpressed when rock star president, Barack Obama, sweeps into town. From the New York Times:

Asked by one Moscow newspaper what they expected to come out of Mr. Obama’s visit, most respondents had the same answer: traffic jams.

That’s not funny. That’s prophetic and objective. The big O will have done nothing other than provide conjecture and hyperbole. Just a great big con job. In 20 years time, the world will talk at ease about how useless Obama was. But it will have learnt nothing about avoiding another big O. The world needs hope. Unfortunately it finds it in the empty vessels. C’est la vie.

you may be right Mehaul. It remains to be seen how long the “empty vessel” movement in Western politics continues. My prediction is that it will last until the next big crisis. However the “next crisis” could in fact turn out to be any of the current crises simply getting worse than expected (Pakistan, GFC, etc).
